Shalala and Goldschmidt Discuss Health Care Reform in Welcome Address to New Medical Students

As the debate over health care reform rages, the Miller School's crop of freshman medical students were assured that any such reforms would take place during the years they are preparing to become doctors and even after graduation.
The health policy discussion was part of a welcome event for the Class of 2013 hosted by Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School and CEO of UHealth, the University of Miami Health System, and University President Donna E. Shalala. Goldschmidt drew on his long background in academic medicine as he assured the students that the Miller School is the place where they will see health care reform in action and encounter patients early in their education, including some of South Florida's neediest residents.

Typhoon Relief Efforts
As you may have read, a catastrophic typhoon has recently hit Taiwan and China resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and leaving thousands homeless or displaced. The typhoon dropped approximately 80 inches of rain on Taiwan alone.
University of Miami Hospital Joins UM Telephone Network
University of Miami Hospital joined the UM telephone network on Saturday, August 15. All phone number prefixes will change from 325 to 689, with the exception of the community physicians, whose numbers will remain the same. Five-digit abbreviated dialing to other areas in the hospital and other campuses and locations will also be available. If you are calling within the hospital or from another UM location, you will only need to use the number 2, followed by the existing four digit extension.

Please note that the deadline for the September 8 issue will be Wednesday, September 2, at 5 p.m. Requests that are received after 5 p.m. on Wednesday will not be included in the September 8 issue of e-Update. The University will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 7.
