UM Researcher Receives $9 Million NIH Grant
Sara J. Czaja, Ph.D., receives $9 million in NIH funding to continue CREATE research.
Sara J. Czaja, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and co-director of the Center on Aging at the Miller School, has received renewed funding of $9 million over five years from the National Institute on Aging for the Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE). The renewal marks the eleventh straight year of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and has resulted in CREATE I, CREATE II and now CREATE III.

The Miller School hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage Grand Rounds on Friday, October 23, featuring Elena Rios, M.D., president and CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). Her address, which was sponsored by the Hispanic American Medical Student Association and co-sponsored by the American Medical Student Association, focused on health care reform measures before Congress, and how that reform might impact Hispanics. Survivors of Rare Fetal Conditions Reunite With Doctor Who Saved Their Lives

Rubén Quintero, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and one of few physicians in the country specializing in fetal therapy, reunited with 47 former patients and their families on October 24 on Atlantic Beach near Jacksonville. At the reunion, 200 white balloons were released to signify the number of babies who die each day as a result of rare fetal conditions.

Family Medicine Wins Pfizer Visiting Professor Award

Robert Schwartz, M.D., professor and chair of family medicine and community health, was awarded a $7,500 grant from Pfizer to bring a type 2 diabetes mellitus expert to the Miller School for educational and training purposes.

 

Newest Episode in UHealth’s Breakthrough Medicine Series Re-Airs November 15
The newest episode of UHealth's television documentary series Breakthrough Medicine will re-air on WPLG-TV, Local 10, this Sunday at 1 p.m. Viewers will meet a young mother from the Bahamas as she fights to save her leg and her life. With the expertise of UHealth's bone cancer specialists from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and a transplanted donor knee, she'll fight for her life with the will to walk again.
