Participants at the 18th Annual UM/Bioethics Network Conference Discuss Ethical Challenges
Top, Kenneth W. Goodman, Ph.D., director of the Florida Bioethics Network, opens UM's 18th annual bioethics conference on Miami Beach. Bottom, Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., discusses the role of human rights in medical education at the conference.

Imagine an influenza pandemic sweeps across Florida, and hospitals are swamped with too many patients in desperate need of too few ventilators. How will they decide who gets one?

More than 300 doctors, nurses, social workers, lawyers, clergy and others from across the state grappled with that and other weighty questions at the 18th annual University of Miami/Florida Bioethics Network Spring Conference, "Florida Ethics: Debates, Decisions, Solutions."

"If there's an emergency and people start showing up by the thousands at hospitals it will be an extraordinary challenge,'' said Kenneth W. Goodman, Ph.D., professor of medicine and philosophy, founder and director of the University of Miami Bioethics Program and director of the Florida Bioethics Network. "Emergency preparation and response raise thorny challenges for both ethics and science."

William G. Harmon, M.D.
New Director Named for Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Holtz Children’s Hospital

William G. Harmon, M.D., has been named director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology of The Children's Heart Center at Holtz Children's Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics at the Miller School.

Dr. Harmon joined the medical school faculty and the Holtz Children's Hospital staff in September 2008 when he was recruited to become the director of pediatric cardiac critical care in the Divisions of Pediatric Cardiology and Critical Care Medicine, and an associate professor of clinical pediatrics. During that time he also has been a staff cardiologist with an active outpatient pediatric cardiology practice.

Statue Honoring Harcourt M. Sylvester Jr. Unveiled at Gala Reception

From left, front row, W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., Jayne S. Malfitano and Laura Cameron with the Harcourt M. Sylvester Jr. statue. Back row, Bernard Fogel, M.D., Joseph Rosenblatt, M.D., and Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D.

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center wrote another chapter in its history Thursday, April 8, unveiling a bronze statue of its benefactor, the late Harcourt M. Sylvester Jr. A crowd of more than seventy people - including Sylvester's daughters, Jayne Malfitano and Laura Cameron - gathered in the courtyard just outside the cancer center for the event.

Joan Scheiner, chairman of the Sylvester Board of Governors, began the presentation with a surprise announcement. Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and City Commissioner Willy Gort declared April 8, 2010 Harcourt M. Sylvester Jr. Statue Dedication Day.

It seemed a fitting tribute for a man who was described by all who spoke as "humble," "dignified," "visionary" and "generous." Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School, talked about how Sylvester "had the ability to see the world as it should be."

Is Your Department Equipped with a Life-Saving Automatic External Defibrillator?

The Automatic External Defibrillator/Public Access to Defibrillation (AED/PAD) Program at the Miller School is requesting your help in compiling information that will help save lives. If your department is equipped with an AED, please send an e-mail to Angel Brotons at abrotons@miami.edu indicating where the AED is located and the name and contact information of the person who manages the department. This information is crucial in the event of an emergency.

If you have any questions, please call 305-243-6491.

Deadline Extended for 2010 American Cancer Society Institutional Grants

The deadline to apply for American Cancer Society institutional grants has been extended to Thursday, May 27. The American Cancer Society is providing funds for meritorious cancer research that cannot be readily supported through other funding mechanisms. The primary purpose of the ACS grant is to provide seed funds for the initiation of promising new projects or novel ideas by junior faculty members.
