William G. Harmon, M.D., has been named director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology of The Children's Heart Center at Holtz Children's Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics at the Miller School.

Dr. Harmon joined the medical school faculty and the Holtz Children's Hospital staff in September 2008 when he was recruited to become the director of pediatric cardiac critical care in the Divisions of Pediatric Cardiology and Critical Care Medicine, and an associate professor of clinical pediatrics. During that time he also has been a staff cardiologist with an active outpatient pediatric cardiology practice.

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center wrote another chapter in its history Thursday, April 8, unveiling a bronze statue of its benefactor, the late Harcourt M. Sylvester Jr. A crowd of more than seventy people - including Sylvester's daughters, Jayne Malfitano and Laura Cameron - gathered in the courtyard just outside the cancer center for the event.

Joan Scheiner, chairman of the Sylvester Board of Governors, began the presentation with a surprise announcement. Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and City Commissioner Willy Gort declared April 8, 2010 Harcourt M. Sylvester Jr. Statue Dedication Day.

It seemed a fitting tribute for a man who was described by all who spoke as "humble," "dignified," "visionary" and "generous." Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School, talked about how Sylvester "had the ability to see the world as it should be."

All employees must receive their annual performance evaluations by Friday, April 30. Supervisors must also submit completed evaluations to their departmental human resource representative no later than the April 30 deadline.

All performance evaluation overall ratings must be entered into DHRS by the departmental HR reps by Monday, May 3.

The Automatic External Defibrillator/Public Access to Defibrillation (AED/PAD) Program at the Miller School is requesting your help in compiling information that will help save lives. The deadline to apply for American Cancer Society institutional grants has been extended to Thursday, May 27. The American Cancer Society is providing funds for meritorious cancer research that cannot be readily supported through other funding mechanisms. The primary purpose of the ACS grant is to provide seed funds for the initiation of promising new projects or novel ideas by junior faculty members.
