Miller School Launches New Web Site

Increased Web Presence Includes UMiamiMedicine links on Facebook and Twitter; Dean Goldschmidt debuts blog

Following months of collaboration, development and testing, the Miller School is proud to launch its newly designed Web site today. The site, still at www.med.miami.edu, is a comprehensive, user-friendly forum for the latest news and events, publications, and research. You'll also find quick links to important patient services at UHealth - University of Miami Health System, connections to join and follow UMiamiMedicine on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, and a new blog by Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D.

First Patient Enrolled in Stem Cell Study Honored at Luncheon

Rodolfo Hernandez, the first patient to enroll in a clinical trial using stem cells to treat heart failure, returned to the Miller School for a luncheon in his honor on April 14. The date marked exactly two years since Hernandez underwent open heart surgery and received an injection as part of the groundbreaking stem cell trial led by Joshua M. Hare, M.D., Louis Lemberg Professor of Medicine and director of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute.

Amir Jaffer, M.D., Honored with Society of Hospital Medicine’s 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award

Amir K. Jaffer, M.D., associate professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine, has been honored with the Society of Hospital Medicine's Award for Excellence in Teaching. The Philadelphia-based society, the national group that represents hospitalists, recognized Dr. Jaffer at its 2010 annual meeting in Washington, D.C., April 8-11.




University of Miami Medical Women/American Medical Women’s Association Brunch Brings Opportunities

On April 11, women medical students from the Miller School attended the second annual University of Miami Medical Women/American Medical Women's Association (UMMW/AMWA)brunch, at the Rosenstiel School on Key Biscayne. The event brought together students, faculty and community physicians to network and share experiences regarding the careers of women in medicine and science.




Miller School Students Receive Grant for Clinton Initiative Project
President Donna E. Shalala congratulated Miller School students (from left) Yahya Mohammed, Shekeab Jauhari, Tasnim Imran and Afra Ullah for the $1,000 in seed money awarded to their Clinton Global Initiative project.

Four Miller School students, among 13 from UM, will share $1,000 in seed money to aid the Commitments to Action project they developed as part of the Clinton Global Initiative University. The Global Initiative, featuring former President Clinton, brought hundreds of college students and leaders to the Coral Gables campus this past weekend.




Third Annual Integrative Medicine Symposium Kicks Off This Friday

The Miller School's third annual Integrative Medicine Symposium will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Medical Wellness Center. The Symposium will open at 9:30 a.m. Friday and feature more than 24 accredited presentations, dozens of demonstrations and tasting tables. Topics will include acupuncture, clinical nutrition, laser therapy, chiropractic care, research design, integrative medicine clinical services, holistic nursing, music therapy, herbal medicine and more.




Last Call to Sign up for Corporate Run

Don't miss out on the festivities planned for the Corporate Run in Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami on Thursday, April 29, at 6:45 p.m. To be a part of Team UM, please submit the registration form along with cash or a check for $30 made out to the "University of Miami" to the Medical Wellness Center by 9 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday). Thereafter, Corporate Run registration will continue through Footworks at 305-666-RACE.
