Miller School’s New M.D./M.P.H. Program Awarded $2.2 Million to Address Physician Shortage

Starting next summer, Miller School students will have the option of pursuing an M.D. and  M.P.H. in four years.

The Miller School has received a $2.2 million five-year grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to support innovative components of a newly created M.D./M.P.H. program. The new educational track will award the student both an M.D. and an M.P.H. (Master of Public Health) after four years of school. The program will respond directly to a severe shortage of physicians trained in public health and health care delivery.

The first two years of the program will be taught on the Miami campus of the Miller School, integrating public health coursework and research experiences from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health with the medical education experience. Years three and four will take place predominantly in Palm Beach County at the clinical teaching sites currently affiliated with the University of Miami's regional medical campus. In addition, the Palm Beach County Health Department and the Florida Public Health Institute will be important sites of clinical and public health education.

Dr. Szapocznik Receives National Hispanic Science Network Tribute

José Szapocznik, Ph.D., accepts a tribute award from Nora D. Volkow, M.D., director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, at the NHSN annual conference.

José Szapocznik, Ph.D., professor and chair of epidemiology and public health, was recognized with a tribute award by the National Hispanic Science Network (NHSN) for founding the organization and leading it for a decade as its chairman.

Dr. Szapocznik, who stepped down as chairman two months ago, received the award on September 30 at the NHSN's annual conference in New Orleans.

Under Dr. Szapocznik's leadership, the NHSN grew into a cutting-edge international science network, honoring its mission of improving the health of Hispanics by increasing the scope and quality of interdisciplinary translational research on drug abuse. Significant funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has helped the organization nurture Hispanic scientists in pursuit of drug abuse research.

Miller School Faculty Share a ‘Snowy Day’ with Debbie School Students

Steven E. Lipshultz, M.D., reads The Snowy Day to children at the Debbie School.

Students at the Debbie School were delighted last week to listen to two great role models read The Snowy Day in an attempt to break the record set in 2009, when adults read the same book to two million children across the world.

Steven E. Lipshultz, M.D., professor and chair of pediatrics and executive dean for child health, and Judy Schaechter, M.D., associate professor and associate chair of pediatrics, read the children's classic by Ezra Jack Keats to the excited and curious children who used the opportunity to discuss a rarity in South Florida: snow.

Help Tackle Cancer: Sign up for the Dolphins Cycling Challenge

UM President Donna E. Shalala and Mike Dee, Dolphins chief executive officer, are leading the Dolphins Cycling Challenge.

With what sponsors hope will become South Florida's biggest bike ride a little more than a month away, the University of Miami is encouraging employees and students to don their cycling helmets and shorts and form teams to participate in the two-day Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC) that will benefit Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The challenge, a collaborative effort between the Miami Dolphins Foundation and UM's Miller School of Medicine, will be held November 20-21 to support research at Sylvester. Cyclists at any skill level can take part. On the first day of the ride, entrants will participate in a 100-mile "Century Ride" from downtown Miami to West Palm Beach, where they can enjoy an end-of-the-ride celebration at City Place. The second day features two options: a 70-mile ride from City Place in West Palm Beach to Sun Life Stadium, or a 30-mile ride from Fort Lauderdale to Sun Life Stadium. For child and pre-teen riders, Dolphins Cycling Challenge will offer various courses on the grounds of Sun Life Stadium.

Paul Hudgins Throws First Pitch of Marlins Season-Ender

Paul Hudgins, the Miller School's associate vice president and medical chief human resources officer, threw out the first pitch of the Florida Marlins' last game of the season, which was sponsored by UHealth Sports Medicine. Thanks to Hudgins' good luck pitch - and a three-run homer by second baseman Dan Uggla - the Marlins went on to win the October 3 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5-2, ending their season with an overall 80-82 record. The hapless Pirates concluded their 18th consecutive losing season with a 57-105 record, worst in the majors.

Miller School Doctoral Programs Ranked Highly by National Research Council

The Miller School's epidemiology and public health program is among four University of Miami doctoral programs ranked in the top quartile of U.S. doctoral programs, according to a comprehensive assessment released recently by the National Research Council (NRC).

Three other Miller School programs - microbiology and immunology, physiology and biophysics, and molecular and cellular pharmacology - were among the dozen UM programs that were ranked in the top half of all U.S. programs of their type.

Based on data from 2005 and 2006, the NRC rankings are the first released by the agency in 15 years. In the previous rankings, which were released in 1995 and based on data collected in 1993, six UM doctoral programs were in the top half.
