Transplant Pioneers Celebrate 40 Years of Life-Saving Care

At a symposium marking the 40th anniversary of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital transplant program, Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., reflected on the enormous contribution the Miami Transplant Institute has made to medicine, on the physicians there who spend hour after hour in complex surgeries, and on the patients who, over those decades, have come to see the transplant program as a place of hope.

Upon concluding her tour of the Department of Surgery's Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and General Dentistry's new comprehensive surgery and dentistry office at University of Miami Hospital, Annabelle Sanchez, a clinical therapist in the hospital's psychiatric department, had much the same enthusiastic reaction as others who attended the October 20 open house.



UHealth Selected to Open Clinic for Patients with LAM Disease

The University of Miami Health System-UHealth has been selected as one of only 15 sites in the country to open a clinic for patients with lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). UHealth was selected by the LAM Foundation because of its diverse team of specialists with expertise in the rare disease.



UM Brain Bank Receives NIH Award for Genotype-Tissue Expression Project

The University of Miami/National Parkinson's Foundation Brain Endowment Bank, directed by Deborah Mash, Ph.D., the Jeanne C. Levey Professor of Neurology and Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, is the recipient of a three-year award from the NIH to partner with researchers across the country for the Genotype-Tissue Expression project (GTEx).



HBO’s Bryant Gumbel Pays Tribute to Marc Buoniconti in Documentary

Watch tonight at 10 p.m. on HBO as Bryant Gumbel pays tribute to Marc Buoniconti, president of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, on the Emmy-winning show Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel in a new segment called "A Remarkable Journey."

On Oct. 26, 1985, Citadel linebacker Marc Buoniconti stopped East Tennessee's Herman Jacobs short of a first down on a crucial third-and-one play. The collision left Buoniconti, son of former Miami Dolphins great Nick Buoniconti, paralyzed from the neck down.  



Susan E. Folstein, M.D., Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Susan E. Folstein, M.D., a pioneer in genetic studies of autism, is the 2010 recipient of the Ming Tsuang Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics.

The award, presented at the society's XVIIIth World Congress of Psychiatric Genetics, held in Athens, Greece, earlier this month, honors a scientist who has made a major contribution to the advancement of the field of psychiatric genetics.



Leo Harris, P.A., Honored for Being the “Compassionate Link” to Organ Donors

Leo Harris, a physician's assistant at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, is this year's recipient of the 2010 Support Services Practitioner of the Year Luminare Award from the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency. The award was presented during the organization's annual awards ceremony on Saturday. October 23.



Miller School Students Help Raise Funds for Down Syndrome at 2010 Buddy Walk

Daniel Lichtstein, M.D., interim regional dean and senior associate regional dean for medical education at the Miller School at FAU, joined third- and fourth-year students and members of their families for the 2010 Buddy Walk on October 17 at John Prince Memorial Park in Lake Worth.
