Miller School Hosts AAMC Visit for Prestigious Community Service Award

In the hopes of winning an acclaimed award for community service, leadership for the Miller School hosted a breakfast meeting on Monday, August 31, to kick off a one-day site visit from representatives of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
The Miller School is one of three finalists for the 2009 Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service, presented by the AAMC. The University of Miami was the first recipient of that award in 1993. This year, the Tulane School of Medicine and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine are also finalists.
Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D. led the breakfast gathering for the three AAMC representatives from Washington, D.C., including deputy chief of staff Jennifer Schlener. She and her colleagues were given an overview of the community service initiatives provided by the Miller School, in a presentation by Robert Hernandez, M.D., senior associate dean for medical student administration.
"They were impressed by the extent of service to our community," said Goldschmidt, "in addition to the depth and amplitude of programs developed by UM." Following the initial gathering, the team toured locations where Miller School students and faculty deliver health care to impoverished Miami residents.
The Spencer Foreman Award doesn't honor a particular service program or individual, but recognizes instances where broad-based collaboration has been established between a community served and a nominee, according to the AAMC's Web site.
The Miller School takes pride in having a number of community service initiatives, including the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Department of Community Service (DOCS) program. As part of DOCS, Miller School students supervised by faculty attending physicians stage health fairs across South Florida.
During the day-long visit, Laurence B. Gardner, M.D., executive dean for education and policy, and Mark O'Connell, M.D., senior associate dean for medical education, also highlighted the Miller School's ongoing commitment to the Jackson Health System, along with Fit-to-Play summer fitness programs, public school motivation programs and a series of women's health screening programs aimed at the underserved.
Goldschmidt said that while the Miller School receives outside funding for some of these projects, it also invests its own resources into these programs, proving again the medical school's commitment to an ongoing relationship with the community. Hernandez also points out that while winning the award would be a tremendous honor, the reason for these programs "is to serve others, and to keep building on the proud tradition that's been created."
The Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service will be presented at the AAMC annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Boston.
